School system's Music Program Named One of the Best in U.S.
The Northborough-Southborough School District, K-12, has been named one of the Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America for 2003. It is based on a nation wide survey conducted in January and February by the American Music Conference and other organizations in music and music education. The survey has been done annually for the past four years. Thirty states are represented as the best this year. The only other school district honored in Massachusetts for 2003 is the Chelmsford school system.
Thousands of public and private teachers, school and district administrators, school board members, parents, and community leaders representing the 50 states, participated in the Web-based survey. Participants needed to answer detailed questions regarding funding, enrollment, student-teacher ratio, participation in music classes, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, private lesson participation, and other factors. Responses were then verified with district officials.
This is a wonderful honor. The music program has been very well supported by the community and school administration. Anne Bryant, Executive Director of the National School Boards Association, said, "We applaud those school boards and communities which have a clear vision of quality education and recognize the strong relationship between the arts and academic achievement."
