Kate studied piano with Diana Fanning, and music theory with Su Lian Tan and Evan Bennett. Her music degree comes with focuses in piano performance, composition, and jazz voice. At Middlebury, Kate directed the “Mischords” a capella group and performed in several solo recitals and concerts. Kate is currently in the process of applying to graduate school for Choral Conducting and Pedagogy.

Prior to joining the faculty at Melican Middle School, Kate taught middle school in Merrimack, New Hampshire for five years where she taught general music and conducted all vocal ensembles. Kate also directed the music for the school musical theatre productions and plans to do so here in Northborough at the middle school. In addition to her work at school, Kate has had a large private piano studio, and she continues to compose original music and arrange choral music for student and adult choirs in Massachusetts. Kate’s original choral work, “Song Cycle: Three Poems by Dorothy Parker” was premiered by the Concord Madrigals in May of 2003. Melican students will perform some of Kate’s original arrangements at upcoming concerts. Kate is a member of the Massachusetts Music Educator’s Association and the Music Educator’s National Association.

Mission For The Class

Mrs. Getchell will encourage every student to do their best in music class. In
class, students will explore many different styles of music, perform music, compose
music, listen to music, and study the relationship between music, art, culture,
history, and other disciplines. She hopes that all students will try to make music a part
of their lives inside and outside of the classroom.
